City Council Handles Unfinished Business In Session

City council met at city hall Monday with Mayor Price and city staff. The road and bridge committee reported on widening Sleights Canyon road, property owner Objections noted and tabled. The council discussed selling 600 feet of old lumber at Fair Grounds and gravel hauling by F Leslie Bolton. Water Works to study storing hose carts in a public garage. Fire chief Hugh Shepherd resigned. Franklin Rogers appointed to the vacancy.

Leeper Named Justice on Idaho Supreme Court

R D Leeper of Lewiston will become associate justice of the Idaho Supreme Court December 31 by gubernatorial appointment. He will be the state's only Democrat on the high court, succeeding W F McNaughton who resigns to private practice. Leeper, a University of Idaho College of Law graduate, previously practiced in Coeur d Alene and Lewiston, served in World War I, and was Idaho American Legion commander in 1921 22.

Reduced Buffalo Meat Supply Shrinks Idaho Orders

Idaho officials report a smaller Yellowstone herd roundup than expected. Rangers captured 160 buffalo versus the 300 promised, triggering reduced meat supply for Boise and surrounding towns that had requested one or more buffalo.

Four Montpelier Residents Die in One Week

Montpelier loses four longtime citizens to death in the past week. Fred Angerter Sr. died in Logan Utah aged 82 after living in Montpelier until 1914. Survived by daughter Rose Wedel and son Fred Angerter Jr. Fred Linder, in Montpelier 40 years, died in San Francisco aged 77 while visiting his daughter. Funeral services were held in Montpelier. surviving daughters Mrs Edward Reiber Mrs Mary Kunz and Mrs Lois Linder and sons Edward and Albert Linder. Mrs John H Shrope died at 63 from heart failure at home. The family has Bear Lake county roots for about 20 years and she is survived by her husband and three sons. Irene Thomas Barrett of Montpelier died in Los Angeles. burial in Los Angeles after residence there for years. Interred in Los Angeles.

Weldon Payne Victim of Ax Wound at Home

J Weldon Payne 18 son of Mr and Mrs J Albert Payne of Bloomington suffered a serious accident while chopping wood. The ax lodged in willows and struck his leg near the ankle causing a fracture and need for eleven stitches. He is reported to be progressing.

Mrs Dow Johnson underwent an operation at Montpelier hospital yesterday for acute appendicitis. Her condition this morning is reported as favorable. Mrs Johnson is the daughter of Mr and Mrs W Smith Hoge.

Many Idaho Counties Raise Taxes Despite Valuation Drop

Twenty six of forty four Idaho counties increased their county tax levy this year from a year ago as counties seek funds after valuation cuts by the board of equalization and assessors. Decreases occurred in fifteen counties while three stayed level. utility valuations rose elsewhere with most property excluding utilities down.

James Transtrum Loses Fingers In Buzz Saw

James Transtrum aged 28 of St. Charles suffered a severe laceration to his right hand while moving a buzz saw in use at his home. He was treated at Dr. Moore's Emergency hospital then rushed to a hospital in Ogden Utah for immediate operation and is reported to be recovering as well as can be expected.

Lions Visit Soda Springs for Zone Meeting

Paris Lions Club members traveled to Soda Springs for a zone meeting with Pocatello Paris Soda Springs and Grace Lions clubs. District Governor Richards of Provo Utah attended and provided advice. A banquet capped the event with musical numbers by Arch Shepherd and Dr M M Shepherd.

Bear Lake turkey pool pays out twelve thousand dollars

The Bear Lake county Christmas turkey pool completed its shipment loading for New York markets. The Egg Producers Association and Northwest Turkey Growers Association funded the pool managed by county agent Duke. About 29 cents per top bird will be paid to Bear Lake growers with the $12,000 payout noted and the rest to follow as the pool is disposed of.
