Oppose Bear River water use for Utah cities in region 4
At a Bear River Protective Association meeting in Montpelier Chairman Floyd Dunn criticized Region 4 of the Bureau of Reclamation for plans to tax Bear River counties and fund municipal water to Ogden Weber and Salt Lake. He warned the Conservancy District would tax real property for up to 60 years and outside counties could avoid guarantees, risking nonreimbursable water uses and flood risks to Caribou and Cache counties. The group seeks a Congressional investigation and is preparing papers for action.

History of the phosphate industry in eastern Idaho
The J R Simplot Company formed a Minerals and Chemical Division in 1944 and built Idaho’s first phosphate treatment plant at Pocatello. It was government financed and operated until 1946, then purchased by Simplot. From 1944 to 1946 they acid treated rock to make superphosphate from Anaconda and San Francisco Chemical. In 1946 Simplot became firm in the phosphate industry, leasing land near Pocatello and acquiring a plant, expanding via Gay Mine on the Fort Hall Reservation. They supplied much of the 1946 1947 export rock and operated the Pocatello plant until 1952 when triple superphosphate began. The Anaconda plant was moved to Simplot operations. The Gay Mine has produced over 11 million tons to date. From 1956 to 1959 they operated the Continental mine in Clark County Idaho and Beaverhead County Montana, shipping most material to a Canadian fertilizer plant. Currently Simplot operates the Gay Mine in Bingham County on Indian lands and the Conda mine in Caribou County. They engaged Westvaco Chemical Division for low grade rock to produce elemental phosphorus, with Westvaco LF Plant starting Idaho production on August 3 1949 and continuing. Monsanto started a Soda Springs plant in 1952 using Ballard rock in Caribou County for elemental phosphorus. (Continued on page four).
