Lawrence Spencer, in a dugout in France, describes improvised living quarters built from cardboard, wood, and German salvage. He notes slow mail, daily improvements, a roofed, two‑man shelter with dining and sleeping areas, a self made fireplace, and limited film usage while promising further letters.
1st Sgt. Lloyd Passey and Gwen Rich married Aug 5 at Gods Springs. Rich is daughter of Dan C Rich and Mrs. Carrie Passey is Lloyds mother. The couple met in Paris. Lloyd serves with the US Army at Camp Atterbury Indiana and is on furlough. Mrs Passey will stay in Paris until her husband returns to duty.
Montpelier prepares for a two day Bear Lake Rodeo this Friday and Saturday with favorable weather expected and a record crowd likely. The Montpelier Chamber of Commerce supports the event with an A-1 show and Montpelier Day Friday when stores will close. A three day carnival runs Thursday through Saturday. Plan to attend and enjoy the rodeo and carnival attractions.
The Hugh Findlay family organization will meet at Fish Haven on Saturday August 12 at 11 am. All descendants and in laws are invited to attend. Bring your own lunch. By the president, Bishop Hugh Findlay.
Ada Budge Gladys Bateman Velma Hansen and Irene Wyler attended the funeral in Bennington for Mrs Marion Parker. Mrs Leonard Johnson and daughter Geraldine returned to Crockett California after a month with the Stucks family. Preston Thomas, son of the Thomases of Bloomington, has reached a San Diego training base for Navy service and will join a sea vessel. Mrs Don C Haddock of Provo Utah visited with her son Dunford now at Navy duty in San Francisco. Dunford is in Deep Sea Diving training at Tibourn and completed the course with top marks. He dived two hundred feet in a diving bell and works mainly at 60 to 90 feet. He longs to see Bear Lake friends.

Bear Lake county 4 H club council members meet August 10 to organize the 4 H Club Fair set for August 28. Judges from the district office will be available. The fair will feature livestock and home economics judging, a style dress revue, competitive judging, and demonstrations.
Mrs. Wilford Tueller left for home after visiting her mother. Mrs. James Dunn and Miss Janet and Marilyn Grim returned from Salt Lake City. Mrs. Mary Hartney returned home from Fish Haven after helping at the Ivan Beck home. Mrs. W. Smith Hoge visited Montpelier to attend a club and held high score at bridge. Charles Findlay of Paria now Cardston Canada visits Idaho for the Findlay family meeting in Fish Haven. August 12 Charles is son of Hugh Findlay, Bear Lake pioneer, now ordinance worker in the Alberta Temple.
Ernest Smith age 58 of Fish Haven died in Montpelier hospital from injuries after being caught between a hay derrick arm and upright post while raising hay. He was a lifelong farmer. survived by ten children, five now living, including Merlyn of Fish Haven and Don Raymond Thomas in Ogden, plus a brother and a sister. Funeral held Wednesday at 1 pm in Fish Haven ward chapel with interment in Fish Haven cemetery. F. M. Williams Mortuary in charge.
Ella Jarvis Rogers 37 of Logan died last Monday after a yearlong illness. Funeral held Thursday at noon at the Logan 5th LDS ward chapel. Survived by Franklin Rogers husband four children Betty Valene Edwin Franklin Henry Jarvis Cat Ella Rogers two sisters May Gudmundson and Ida Jarvia Wood. Former Bloomington residents.
An expanded letter from 1st Lt Kenneth R. Hampton, Anti Aircraft Artillery gun battalion, in France, dated July 21, details arrival in July after nine months in England, frontline conditions with fox holes and slit trenches, and morale among troops. He notes German POWs, French workers supported by Americans, and rough K and C rations. He compares the landscape to English countryside, remarks on weather, driving on the right, and widespread destruction of towns and homes.
War Department reports Sherril Beck of Ovid killed during the invasion of France on D-Day. Aged 20, he volunteered January 21, 1943. Survived by father Leon Beck and siblings Noreen Maxine Junior and Dale. Details not released.
Everan Peterson 21 a paratrooper from Ovid died in action July 24 during the invasion of France. He entered service February 1943 and was valedictorian of his class. Survived by parents Mr and Mrs Joseph Peterson and four brothers Alvoid Walter Dean and Jerry of Ovid.
Trapping allotments for the 1944 45 season will be granted at two meetings. The upper district 5 meeting is Aug 26 at Idaho Falls Bonneville Hotel at 1 p m. The lower district 5 meeting is Aug 29 at 1 p m in the Soda Springs courthouse.

Conservation officer Dana Messenger reports Bear Lake received 877000 rainbow trout in a recent planting. The fish, 3 to 4 inches long, were released at Fish Haven about half a mile from shore to shield them from birds.
Word reached here of the Army Air Corps airman Preston Brimhall killed in a plane crash Sunday morning July 30 at a training base in Victorville California. One other airman died in the crash. Surviving are his wife his father Wm Brimhall of Provo Utah one sister Mrs Lucille Gerlach of Pocatello and four brothers Dale Claude Don and Keith two of whom are in the armed forces. Details on the accident and funeral arrangements were not learned.
A farewell dance for service members is scheduled for Friday August 18 at the Paris pavilion. The item notes social visits including Mrs. Lewis Stone of Franklin staying with Mr. and Mrs. Wm Lauritzen and other local gatherings.
