Mrs Bert Hillier, Idaho Democratic committeewoman, announces a committee to lead the state’s delegation to the 1958 Democratic Men’s Conference in Washington next April 21 and 22. Includes Mrs Nal Pugmire of Montpelier to represent the area. The conference offers workshops and sessions to aid in campaign preparation.
Glade Booth, a sophomore at Telding High School, is the new president of the Fielding Chapter of the Future Farmers of America, succeeding King Wallentine. Booth has been active in agriculture events, placing high in a farm mechanics contest and placing in the public speaking contest, and is the son of Bryan Booth, president of Bear Lake Valley Biryman's Cooperative creamery.
The Idaho YMCA Youth Legislature begins its 23rd annual session at the State Capitol in Boise, running Friday and Saturday April 10 11 12. Elected officials include Youth Governor Bradford D. Smith and Speaker Dan Burns with moderators and chaplains guiding proceedings.
The Rainbow Rod and Gun Club with over 1200 members plans its annual membership dance at Montpelier High School gym Friday night April 11. Tickets include club membership, dance admission, and a chance at 180 prizes from Montpelier Paris firms and distributors. Prizes range from rifles and fishing gear to homemaker prizes. The event starts early and continues into the early hours.
A teenage youth center will open in Hawkes' building in Paris on Saturday April 12 at 7 30 p m for the youth of the Paris area. It will be a social space with dancing and recreational activities run largely by a teenage committee with adult volunteers. Hours are set for Monday Wednesday and Thursday nights from 7 to 11 and on Fridays and Saturdays 7 to 11 with some equipment yet to be installed. Robert D Kerns heads the committee with Wilford Michel James Hawkes and Mr Mrs Willard Hansen and Mr Mrs Jess Schedegger also involved.
Secretary of Agriculture Ezra Taft Benson told Franklin County Farm Bureau members at Preston that agriculture should be farmer run not government run. He cited national price gains for farm products and meat, praised cattlemen for resilience, and noted Idaho’s livestock importance and relief programs during past price pressures.
Local Army 2nd Lt. Max Vallentine of Paris participated with the 10th Antiaircraft Missile Battalion in annual firing tests at Red Canyon range New Mexico. Missiles were fired at high flying drone aircraft and results will guide operation improvements. Vallentine entered the Army in 1956 and is assigned to the battalion's headquarters battery at Fairchild AFB Spokane Washington.
The notice warns that the income tax filing deadline is Tuesday April 15 and time extensions are only for personal emergencies that prevent return preparation. Inability to pay or vague excuses do not excuse penalties. April 15 is also the final date for the first 1958 quarterly estimate for non withholding taxpayers.
About 60 relatives gathered at the Stucki family home in Paris to honor Mr. and Mrs. William B. Stucki on their 50th wedding anniversary. The couple married April 2, 1908 in the Salt Lake Temple. their family includes numerous relatives across Utah and California, with Linden Bruce, their 19th grandchild, born recently.
Five Bear Lake County employees of Utah Power Light received service awards for ten years of accident free work. Lee Burderson Wesley Windley Ellsworth Cleveland Leon Taylor and Lamont Pugmire were honored at a Preston banquet with their wives attending.
Claude Leslie Kimball age 72 prominent Garden City cattle and sheep raiser and Rich county resident died Monday after a yearlong illness. Funeral today Thursday April 10 at 1 pm in Garden City ward chapel. He was born December 29 1885 in Meadowville and leaves a widow eight of twelve children, a brother Vero Kimball, 24 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Fred Cooper a Grace state senator was named temporary chairman at the Bear River Commission's first formal meeting in Salt Lake City. The commission will administer the Bear River compact which governs water use across Idaho Utah and Wyoming. Coopers fellow members include Melvin Lauridsen Mark R Kulp A V Smoot Lawrence B Johnson J R Bingham Earl Lloyd S Reed Dayton and J W Myers with a permanent federal appointee to follow.
The Paris Old Folks group sets a 60 plus party at Fielding High School gym and auditorium. A 4 p.m. movie, 6 p.m. dinner, program and dancing follow, with prizes for oldest man and woman, oldest married couple, and youngest attendee over 60.
Charles Wyler has taken a position as manager of the Gem Valley Swiss Cheese factory at Grace. He and his family will move to a new home there, leaving Paris for the first time. The Wyler children Cathy and Diane will finish their grades in local schools this year while they live with relatives in Paria during the week.
Idaho bighorn herds face survival challenges amid habitat changes caused by human activity. Rocky Mountain bighorns in Idaho number about 2 500, with limited hunting impacts and loss of winter range cited as potential factors in their small populations.
Two meetings of Class A School District No. 88 trustees last week tried to resolve bond election results showing a narrow margin. The board reviewed voter qualification issues, discussed certifying precinct returns, and debated deleting a clause claiming only real property taxpayers voted. They planned to contact the bond company attorneys in Denver for guidance.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will dedicate its new Hamilton New Zealand temple on April 20 with President David O. McKay presiding. Attendees include L. D. S. groups from around the world and about 1500 local members. Former Bear Lake residents Morris B. Athay Mabel Athay and Merrill Booth teach at the nearby college.
