Guns, grief and a city’s gun violence drift in Syracuse
In Syracuse, 15-year-old Akil Williams was shot this summer near a corner marked by teddy bears. A 17-year-old was hit in the knee a block away, and 18-year-old Tyshawn Lemon was killed last year before his high school graduation. The city of 143,000 has a teen gun violence crisis with 48 youths aged 12 to 17 killed or injured since 2014 through June, twice the rate of many large cities. Residents blame easy access to firearms, poverty, and street code, while programs at the Faith Hope Community Center and Mary Nelson Youth Center try to offer safe spaces and support. Lemon’s unsolved killing and ongoing worry affect families, schools, and neighborhoods on Syracuse’s South Side.
