Two local veterans, Sylvester Burke and Roland T. Clark, survived the Balangiga Massacre. Burke, born 1876 in Oswego, faced postwar obscurity after a 1901 letter and a near medal award. he died 1953. Clark, born 1880 in Hornell, served in Spanish American War and Ninth Infantry, retrieved the Balangiga flag, and died 1969 as Oswego’s last survivor.
