New York Court Won't Hear Chimp Personhood Appeals
The New York Court of Appeals won't hear The Nonhuman Rights Project appeals seeking legal personhood for chimps Kiko and Tommy. Lower courts rejected granting chimp rights, with judges stating chimps cannot bear legal duties or be held legally responsible for actions. Tommy lives in a cage under state and federal licensing, while Kiko resides at a Niagara Falls sanctuary. The group plans renewed filings and possible cases for other species, including elephants, in different jurisdictions.
