Oswego's 1837 refugee voyage across Lake Ontario
Maritime history recounts how a Canadian group fled Oshawa during the Patriot War and, aided by Daniel Conant, attempted a perilous winter crossing to Oswego. On December 27, 1837, the 100 foot schooner carried 40 patriots under a bright moon. Ice and wind forced them to seek a port, as their hopes of liberty clashed with ice floes and cold.
