Elmina Spencer Oswego Civil War nurse remembered
Joyce Cook rediscovered Elmina Spencer, Oswego’s famed Civil War nurse, who cared for thousands of “her boys” in the 147th Regiment. The Oswego woman, honored in Albany and met by First Lady Helen Roosevelt, fought for supplies and aid, earning lasting local reverence and a seeking push for her induction into history. Cook, author of a forthcoming biography, advances the case with new letters and a living descendant.
