Adirondack land plan includes trails and paddling access

New Yorks Department of Environmental Conservation released a formal plan for 18,000 acre Essex Chain Lakes area in the central Adirondacks. The multi use proposal features a snowmobile connector trail from Indian Lake to Minerva, bicycle and horse trails, a Cedar River bridge, primitive tent sites along the upper Hudson, and disability accessible campsite and waterway access. Floatplane designated tent sites noted. Public hearings planned. plan online Friday. The Essex Chain Lakes tract is part of 161,000 acres bought by The Nature Conservancy from Finch Pruyn in 2007.

Port City to Begin 81-Room Holiday Inn Express Project

Oswego officials expect construction on an 81 room Holiday Inn Express and Suites on Route 104 to begin in two weeks. The site north of Ruby Tuesday faced zoning disputes, later resolved as lawsuits were dismissed. The Oswego IDA approved loans for the $8.6 million project aimed at boosting summer tourism.

Exelon grants $10,000 to Oswego Children’s Museum

Exelon Energy honors Jonathan Shaver with the Cherry E. Cooper Achievement Award and a $10,000 grant to support the Children’s Museum of Oswego CMOO. Shaver, a Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station design engineer, volunteers over 50 hours and leads efforts toward a permanent home for the museum founded in 2013.

Prison employee linked to escape plot in Clinton prison

Investigators believe Joyce Mitchell, a prison instructor, agreed to drive the escape of killers David Sweat and Richard Matt but did not appear. The manhunt entered a sixth day with bloodhounds tracking scents near the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora as Gov Cuomo said more suspects are being questioned.

Hannibal High Hires Interim Leader as Fountain Retires

Hannibal Central School District accepted Superintendent Donna Fountain's resignation on Wednesday night and named Edmund Backus interim superintendent starting August 29. Fountain, in post since 2012, will stay until Aug. 28 to aid transition. Backus previously led Hamilton and has interim roles in Mexico and Liverpool districts.
