Folly And Fanaticism Digging for Treasure on Oswego Waterfront
Maritime historian Richard Palmer will feature Lake Ontario lore including shipwrecks and port history on Saturdays. A 1851 Oswego Journal account describes a treasure dig at Fort Oswego with a mesmeric girl guiding men, a tale reprinted in 1915 in connection with the old Fort Oswego well and the Barge Canal era. The piece notes the well’s legend, the fort’s hilltop site, and harbor developments that altered landforms by the 1930s.
