Bishop backs farmworkers’ push for overtime and unions
Catholic Bishop Edward Scharfenberger joined protesters at Albany with Catholic Charities and farmworkers marching from Long Island for a bill guaranteeing overtime pay and lifting the ban on farmworker unionizing. The rally highlights a constitutional right to unionize but current law excludes 60,000 agricultural workers across about 10,000 farms paying the state’s $9 minimum wage. The Farm Bureau warns overtime costs could threaten some farms amid short weather driven seasons and union rules.
