Free tuition not equal to free college for New York students
New York public college students say Cuomo's Excelsior Scholarship reduces tuition but leaves other costs unaddressed. Brooklyn College senior Florencia Salinas faces about 50 000 in debt despite aid, while Buffalo State junior Avery Edwards expects around 20 000 after graduation. Room and board near 13 000 yearly plus fees and books push total bills well beyond tuition. Students stress help with overall costs is needed, not only tuition assistance, as lawmakers weigh the proposal amid a national surge in debt relief efforts.
