History of science rooted in world cultures, not Europe alone
SUNY Oswego physics professor Alok Kumar and Scott L. Montgomery argue in A History of Science in World Cultures that European scientific revolutions relied on ideas from ancient China, India, Persia, Babylonia and other cultures. The book, praised by reviewers, traces global knowledge networks and challenges Eurocentric views of science.

Early Oswego Harbor Improvements After Fire of 1853
In the wake of the July 5 1853 blaze that destroyed Oswego East Side mills and grain elevators, rebuilding followed by May 1854. Citizens petitioned for harbor work, a city committee recommended dredging to a 12 foot depth from City Hall outward, and a 1854 contract funded a coffer dam to deepen the west harbor. The project faced funding and legal issues, paused until 1867 when railroads spurred renewed work along Water Street frontage.
