First safe repair of disease causing gene in human embryos
Researchers at Oregon Health & Science University report a lab demonstration where CRISPR-Cas9 edited sperm and embryos self repaired a mutation causing hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. The method avoided mosaicism by starting edits before fertilization, with 72 percent repair in 42 of 58 embryos and no development beyond eight cells. Experts caution ethical issues and safety before pregnancy applications.
