Plank roadways an early Oswego County improvement
Early settlers dreaded spring mud on dirt roads until 1846 when the first plank road between Syracuse and Central Square opened. Planks of hemlock formed eight or twelve foot wide pathways with tolls, stage coaches, and frequent horse changes. The Oswego-Rome Plank Road Co began in 1847, serving Scriba, New Haven, Mexico, Albion, Williamstown, and Rome, as travelers rode in four to six horse teams and some rode atop baggage. Severe cold in 1856 slowed routes, prompting praise for the railroad’s arrival four years later and signaling the end of plank roads with the rise of buses and automobiles.

Coast Guard ends search for teens Perry Cohen and Austin Stephanos
After a weeklong, 50 000 square nautical mile hunt for the lost teens in the Atlantic, the Coast Guard suspended rescue efforts at sundown. Private planes and boats will continue to scour the water as families vow to press on. The well known case began July 24 when the boys left Loxahatchee River on Austin Stephens’ boat. Community members donated about 340000 dollars to fund private searches and support the families. NFL star Joe Namath boosted publicity for the case as relatives hold on to hope for survivors.
