He told Eagle editor he would run for the Senate against Pat Harrison in 1923, aiming to defeat Harrison by a large majority. He suggested Bilbo would not challenge Vardaman, and predicted Vardaman's overwhelming victory. He noted party lines would tighten in future Mississippi elections and cited strong local support for his Senate bid.

On Saturday May 21 Mississippi A. and M. College suspended classes and sent about five hundred cadets to cleanse the campus using rakes brooms and trash cans. The day also marked memorial observances for Chief Justice Edward Douglas White with colors at half mast and dismissal of classes. Commencement is planned for Sunday May 29 with a musical program led by A Weatherly in the college chapel.
