First Woman Elected Adams County Education Superintendent
Natchez Miss May 7 Miss V Josephine Pitts teacher at Natchez public school was elected county superintendent of Adams county education in a special election to fill the unexpired term. She is the first Mississippi woman elected to public office. Pitts led the race by 412 votes over the nearest opponent with strong backing from women voters and substantial support from men.

Escape convict Ruby Wells captured near Senatobia Mississippi
Ruby Wells an Arkansas penitentiary escapee was recaptured by Deputies J W Whalen and Frank Moore and returned to custody. He had married a 166 year old Panola County farmer’s daughter two weeks earlier and the bride followed him to the Arkansas penitentiary before staying with relatives in the eastern county. Wells had been sentenced for forgery and escaped after four months. He told officers he shared details of his criminal career with his wife before marriage, but she kept them from her family.

Thweatt Kills Cousin In Oklahoma County Shooting
A man named W F Thweatt shot and killed his cousin Elmer Sanders nine miles south of Oxford around 9 p m Monday. The weapon was a 438 caliber pistol and only one shot was fired at close range. Thweatt surrendered to Sheriff Hartfield Tuesday morning and faces a preliminary hearing in Tula before Justice of the Peace. Sanders, about 20, was a former navy serviceman who rode wild horses, and his burial was arranged with a decent funeral outfit.

Will Thweatt was released on a $1000 bond after today’s trial in Tula for the killing of Elmer Sanders last Tuesday. Esquire W. B. Coleman and John Woolverton heard the case with Judge John Falkner representing the defendant. The state had no lawyer present as a few witnesses testified and the defense argued self defense.
