Circuit Court Adjourns After Week of Grind

The circuit court adjourned after a crowded week with several defendants sentenced to prison. Judge Bates delayed start to 8 AM for the final days to clear the docket, and numerous cases spanning burglary forgery and assault were decided or continued.

Astonishing Southern Farm Crop Gains In 1915

Baltimore March 15 Manufacturers Record publishes a review showing that 1915 farm crop values rose 14.35 percent in the South while the rest of the country rose 5.25 percent. The South’s diversified crops were worth about 2.6 billion, cotton about 750 million, totaling roughly 8.6 billion in all agricultural products for the region. Texas led state crop values at 407 million, with Georgia, California and others following.

Grand Jury Reports 125 Witnesses and 35 Indictments

The Lafayette County grand jury for the March 1916 term examined 125 witnesses and returned 35 indictments. They found the county poor house well kept, officials’ books reasonably accurate, and the jail sanitary as far as the jailer maintains. They criticized lack of contractor records before 1916 and urged better accounting for convict labor, humane prisoner treatment, and prompt jail screening per health rules. They recommended shower baths be avoided and jail screening completed, ending with a request for discharge.
