Grand Jury Reports 125 Witnesses and 35 Indictments
The Lafayette County grand jury for the March 1916 term examined 125 witnesses and returned 35 indictments. They found the county poor house well kept, officials’ books reasonably accurate, and the jail sanitary as far as the jailer maintains. They criticized lack of contractor records before 1916 and urged better accounting for convict labor, humane prisoner treatment, and prompt jail screening per health rules. They recommended shower baths be avoided and jail screening completed, ending with a request for discharge.
