The death of Mrs. Mary Caroline Quinlan at her son in law Fuddle Coates home in Anna Illinois spurred Coates arrest on murder charges alleging strychnine poisoning. The report also notes a trial in Union Missouri, a hanging in Indian Territory, and various other national items from the period.
Two deaths from heat in Memphis Tennessee. Governor A N Longino gave an address at Bay St. Louis Mississippi. Secret service agents captured counterfeiters at Gadsden Alabama. Jerome Taylor charged with killing John McInnis at Merrill Mississippi was granted bail of five thousand dollars. George Piddocks ex foreman of the Kansas City Southern railroad shops at Shreveport Louisiana was murdered by H W Huff a striker.
A mob stormed the Flemingsburg Kentucky jail and hanged William Thacker, a white man sentenced to life for the murder of John Gordon two years earlier. Gordon, a respected citizen, was killed after a quarrel at Foxport. Thacker had sat on the body with a rifle as he smoked. Thacker’s appeals delayed punishment, and angry locals feared further pursuit. Turner gets five years for involuntary manslaughter in Memphis. bail may be set pending supreme court review. Hume, a Scruggs murder witness, was shot during the case discussion. Turner’s return raised risk of mob violence.
Mrs Elizabeth Hutton died at her home near Glade Springs Virginia at 101 years old Born in 1802 she spent most of her life in Washington and Smythe counties She left many descendants including ten children 64 grandchildren 165 great grandchildren and 260 great great grandchildren
A Virginia and Southwestern freight train derailed after hitting a fallen stump at Fish Spring Tennessee. Engineer Robert Burton of Bristol and Fireman William Ryden of Bluff City were trapped. Ayden died, Burton injured seriously but alive. Nearby Kentucky incidents include a deputy clash at Barbourville with multiple shots fired and a black man wounded. Horse Fonso died at a Kentucky stud after a Derby win. Paducah bicycle accident injures Jim Baldwin. Willie Day in a Woman reveals a man living as a woman near Booneville Mississippi for farm work.
A strike insurance company was organized in Louisville Kentucky to insure employers against losses from labor disturbances. In other news the Tupelo Mississippi spoke factory burned again, with a $10000 loss and no coverage. John S Bennett of Bradford County Florida is jailed on charges of holding a white girl in involuntary servitude. An explosion at Birmingham Alabama powder mills killed four men and nearly wrecked the plant.
Col Morris B Belknap of Louisville nominated on first ballot as Republican candidate for governor of Kentucky. A mob in West Virginia skinned alive and burned a Black man after he criminally assaulted an 11 year old white girl.
An enraged mob near Fastman Georgia lynched Edward Claus a Black man accused of assaulting a white woman. In a separate incident a stranger in Frankfort Kentucky accidentally fired a pistol wounding two of his fingers and killing Miss Rose Gardon.
Mrs Sarah Hill was mysteriously assassinated at her Covington Tennessee home while in bed with her twin babies. The article also notes Mississippi’s unappropriated lands totaling 112,720 acres available for entry.

New York telegraph reports at Charing Cross hospital Dr. Davidson achieved a successful superficial nose cancer treatment with radium after prior X ray failure. Four brief exposures over three weeks healed the area. after six weeks two more exposures left no visible scar, though deep cancers remain uncertain.
