Crockett Wells an escapee from Kingston Adams county was captured in Port Gibson last week with fellow escapee The Ingraham by Deputy Sheriff Magee. They were placed in the county prison awaiting Adams county officials’ orders.
A majority of state banks have sent in reports requested by State Auditor Cole detailing their condition on July 1. The statements will be tabulated in the coming days.
The governor counted the cash in the treasury last week and found 137000 dollars, with cash and books balancing to a cent. Smith county crops look strong with expected record corn and cotton. Potatoes sugar cane and other field crops also good and farmers are jubilant. B F Brownlee eight miles east of Columbus was struck by lightning while plowing, killing him and his mules. They were not found until late evening. The Hinds County supervisors awarded H K Hardy of Jackson a 1399 contract to repair the Raymond Courthouse roof and surrounding walks. Jackson unveils a new jail design with electric bells and bars for security, promising novelty in Mississippi.
While en route to Charleston from Harrison last week a horse driven by D. W. Patterson and N. R. Thompson became frightened and ran away. Patterson jumped from the wagon and sustained a compound fracture of the right leg while Thompson received a few bruises but helped halt the enraged animal without serious injuries.
Fast mail from St Louis crashed into a stalled excursion train at Dead Man's Curve three miles from Lee's Summit Missouri. Three killed and 68 injured, possibly three fatally. Two dead were tramps aboard the fast mail. The excursion train had 12 coaches. engine failed, flagman not sent. Deaths taken to Lee's Summit. injured to Missouri Pacific hospital in Kansas City.
In Bluffton Indiana on July 13 John Terrell a farmer near Petroleum killed his son in law Melvin Wolfe by firing both shotgun barrels into Wolfe s head as he lay on an operating table to have a leg amputated after a prior gunshot wound. Wolfe had married Terrell s daughter four years earlier and reportedly deserted his wife and child. Terrell then threatened the crowd with his gun before driving to the sheriff s residence and surrendering to jail.
A severe electrical and wind storm hit Beaver City Nebraska on July 13 lasting 45 minutes. Two and a quarter inches of rain fell, windmills and small buildings were destroyed, wheat crop damaged, and nine tents at a Union Salvation Army camp were blown down. Commander Holland was injured by a falling tent pole and dislocated his shoulder. The camp was flooded, and women members were sheltered in nearby homes for the remainder of the stay.
Gil bert Mullins longtime Fort Leav enworth mutiny leader escaped from the Junction City county jail Saturday with three others. He was pursued by Patrick Folck who confronted Mullins at his home and, after a first missed shot, chased him to a cornfield. Folck’s second shot felled Mullins, who then surrendered.
John Tobin of the marble cutters union reports to the Central Federated labor union that 1,600 marble workers in Greater New York have been locked out to press the adoption of an arbitration plan. The workers say they will not sign.
Flora July 13 Frank Snyder age 27 and John McDaniels age 25 drowned Sunday afternoon in Deer creek.
Santa Rosa California reports indicate the hop crop will be much lighter than initially forecast. Conditions now show yields far below last year, with similar drop in other sections.

Patrick A. Ducey a wealthy retired lumberman died in Detroit aged 70. He built a vast timber empire including 30000 acres in the Adirondacks New York and operated there until 1895. Randall Alderman fled to Meridian after attempting to abduct a Black girl in Kemper County Mississippi. A mob of Black residents pursued the prisoner and took him into custody, leading to his arrest.

In Rome on July 12 the Neapolitans sent the sacred mitre of Saint Gennero to the pope, the archbishop promising the relic’s care. Cardinal Rampolla and Monsignor Caracciolo delivered it, and Bisseti thanked Naples for the pious act before the mitre was placed in the pontiff’s sickroom.
