The Turkish warship Medjidia, first Ottoman vessel built in America, was launched at Cramp Ship Building Co. Philadelphia. Mrs. Edwin S Cramp sponsored the ceremony, evading Koran rules by breaking the bottle with an American woman. The cruiser measures 330 feet, 42 feet beam, 16 foot draft, 3300 tons, with 22 knot speed and a mixed battery of rapid fire guns and torpedoes.

In Wilkesbarre Pennsylvania Joshua Butler his wife and their infant were struck by the east bound Black Diamond express on the Lehigh Valley Railroad near Port Bowkley. The carriage and horse were demolished and the family was thrown about 100 feet. The infant died soon after the collision and Mrs Butler perished instantly.
