The 8th Coast Artillery Band from Fort Barrancas Florida performed two Sunday concerts for Mississippi residents. Governor Russell welcomed the group at the executive mansion and read a recruiting appeal urging a period of service in the U S Army for Mississippi youths. Lieutenant Major Edwin O Connor organized the recruiting efforts and joined the governor at the concert before the band played again at Smiths Park for Jacksons largest crowd since Inauguration Day.
