The Greenville Democrat Times notes a surge in demand for improved machinery as crops require less labor due to wartime shifts. It cites high farm activity, labor shortages, and hints at crops in need of intensive cultivation once labor returns. Also promotes Ballard's Snow Liniment for pain relief with local ad.
Senator Vardaman and Governor Jilboe left Jackson for Washington two days earlier. The governor took the oath as U S representative from the state’s first district and Vardaman was sworn in as Mississippi senator. Lieutenant Governor Russell assumed governorship and the couple resides at the Governor’s Mansion for the next five years. Rumor places Harrison possibly named Minister to Singapore.
The Mississippi race features Senator Vardaman in the North and Congressman Pat Harrison in the South with both sides claiming the lead. The Brookhaven visit drew crowds from at least six counties and supporters cite Vardaman's stronger, more impressive speeches. The McComb City Journal predicts a large majority for Vardaman and notes opposition from large daily papers, attributing that to control by wealthy interests.
The St. Louis Post Dispatch notes Mississippi's agricultural shift from cotton to corn, cattle and wheat. Plantings rose from 18 000 acres in 1916 to 85 000 in 1917 and a 270 000 bushel harvest came from the state prison farm. Flour mills are rising as the state aims for local wheat supply.

Mrs. Earle Annie Todd of Memphis, formerly Mrs Harris, staying at the Colonial Hotel. She recalls a 1904 summer in Oxford and advocates sugar saving. W. H. and Noeut on Johnson of Route 4 made a Water Valley trip. Mr and Mrs. Elgin Davis moved to town and rented a Cemetery Street cottage. Mr Davis works for H P Dowie.
An old advertisement claims freezone, a ether compound from Cincinnati, will lift corn or callus with a few drops, causing instant relief and easy removal without pain or skin irritation. It urges readers to buy at drug stores or have it ordered if unavailable.
The notice lists White Examinations for Sept 5 6 7 and Sept 19 20 21 for second white exams. Colored Examinations are set for Sept 27 28. Advanced English General Science and Modern History are included in the exam schedule.
A terse notice lists products including seeds and herbs available for sale. The entry references a commercial address on Main Street in Saint Louis Missouri with dates noted as the 8th and 15th and 17th of September.
Logue Tyson, a Black laborer living five miles west of Taylor, has worked every day he could, earning $54 from crop farming. Yesterday he went to Oxford and invested $25 in War Savings Certificates, noting that if both races worked as he does, the government could readily raise funds.
An advertisement touts Herbine as a liver stimulant stomach toner and bowel purifier. The product is priced at 60 cents and sold by A. H. Kendel in Ady.
The South Yocona Road District of Lafayette County Mississippi invites bids on September 8 1918 for repair and maintenance of district roads. Lafayette County Mississippi notifies sealed bids for building four bridges along Taylor Road District totaling 190 feet. Bids due 12 noon on September 10 1918 with plans on file. Winning bidder must provide good and solt bond equal to twice the bid. Public outcry may settle award.
State invites sealed bids up to August 10 1918 for keeping the County Home and inmates for one year from January 1 1919 to January 1 1920. Board may reject any bid and set by public outcry. Successful bidder must bond $500 for faithful performance. Seal of office August 13 1918 by J E Woodward D C.
The clerk of the county board will receive sealed bids until 12 noon on Tuesday September 10 1918 for four bridges in Burgess Road District totaling 212 feet. Plans and specifications are on file with the clerk. The board may reject all bids and set the contract at public outcry. The successful bidder must furnish a bond twice the amount of the seal of office by August 13 1918. August 15 22 29.
Oxford recruiting office invites physicians dentists and administrators for Red Cross work. Gulf Division heads in New Orleans coordinate applicants with state associates in Mississippi and nearby towns. Local women form a branch with officers elected. plans for future community support noted.
On Wednesday August 14 a shipment will be sent to Red Cross Headquarters in New Orleans for all materials mailed three weeks ago. A fuller account of the shipment will be provided next week.
The Gulf Division cutting center now handles gauze for surgical dressings. It cuts about 4 000 yards daily and expects near doubling soon. Eighteen New Orleans women work two shifts to fold, spread, and cut the material with an electric machine.
Anna Howard Shaw urges nationwide response to the U S Student Nurse Reserve appeal. Hospitals need all spare nurses immediately to replace those withdrawn. No woman should slack in answering the call to duty.
Mrs. Luella B. Ramsey urges Mississippi farmers to cull nonproducing hens and keep strong pullets for future laying. She notes market timing for old stock, promotes standard bred fowls, and calls for home production of poultry and eggs. The piece also covers canning supplies, crate pricing, and fall garden planting tips.

The Camp Meeting closed Thursday night with Jed leading preaching and many declaring conversions. Despite heat and dust the event drew a strong crowd with Rev. Mr. Woolard and Rev. Mr. Hooper guiding the services and adding to the effort. The forty-sixth gathering at Oxford Camp Ground ends.

Navy announces vacancies for mechanics across all branches and clerical staff in the Aviation and Naval services. Age limit raised to 40. Weekly enlistments list numerous men from Lonnie James to Mize across towns including Winfield, Shaw, Belton, and Meridian, with multiple counties and small towns represented.
