War Department honors University with Student Army Training Corps status

The War Department approves the University of Mississippi for the Student Army Training Corps. Eligible students 18 and older may train on campus, with summer six week camps and potential paths toward officer or specialized service. Enlisted students are on inactive duty unless called, and could be drafted if not retained.

Longtime Oxford Resident Mrs Harris Dies at 87

Mrs. Tom Harris died Sunday at 5 am after months of illness. Born in Maury County, Tennessee, she came to Oxford at age five with her parents. She was 87 on the past June 9 and was formerly Miss Craig. Survived by four daughters Mesdames Frank Riley Tupelo, Andrews Memphis, Thomas Yates Oxford, Montie Harris, and two sons Dr Hubert Harris Memphis and Dudley Harris Sheffield. A husband and several grandchildren are noted as bereaved.

Judge McGowen Nominated and Malaria Cure Advertised

In Holly Springs Mississippi on August 6 the chancery court committee declared Judge James G. McGowen of Water Valley the sole Democratic nominee for chancellor of the Third Chancery Court District. An advertisement promotes HER BINE as a malaria remedy with claims it purifies the body and aids the liver and bowels, priced at 60 cents and sold by A. H. Kendel.

University Army Training Corps offers new enlistment path

The War Department endorses an unrivaled chance for college students to earn a commission in the United States Army while pursuing studies. Eligible men may enroll in the Student Army Training Corps and transfer between Army and Navy as needed with official approval. Uniforms and equipment will be provided, and a dedicated Army officer will join the University soon to facilitate training.
