Fires destroy 20000 acres as residents flee California

Dozens of buildings burned and hundreds of residents and campers fled as two wildfires roared across 20000 acres in Southern California. One blaze in Angeles National Forest above Azusa destroyed 72 structures including 50 cabins and a ranger station. The 15800 acre blaze northeast of Los Angeles shut two power lines while a third line drew close scrutiny. Authorities warned containment would take time amid tinder dry conditions and high winds. In Leona Valley, five homes were lost and about 100 residents evacuated.

Small cockpit gun test planned by Bush administration

Washington reports the Bush administration plans a small scale test arming commercial pilots reversing earlier opposition. The plan mirrors congressional proposals to arm up to 1400 pilots about 2 percent of those flying. Officials say a decision could be announced soon as politics shift. Magaw previously opposed pilots carrying guns citing safety and training concerns. The House backed pilots arming 310 113 in July, while Mineta said he would re examine the issue.
