Schroeder becomes Germanys seventh postwar chancellor

Gerhard Schroeder, a Social Democrat, was sworn in as Germanys chancellor after defeating Helmut Kohl. President Herzog named him, and Schroeder pledged to focus on welfare while guiding economic reforms, Berlin relocation, and the euro rollout with Greens support. The parliament elected him 351 to 287 with 27 abstentions.
