Census: More Americans speak a language other than English
The Census Bureau reports nearly one fifth of Americans use a non English language at home up 50 percent in a decade. Spanish leads, followed by Chinese and rising Russian speakers. About 47 million people and older used a non English language in 2000, with 28.1 million Spanish speakers, many not fully proficient in English. The trend reflects immigration and spurs bilingual schooling and multilingual advertising.
