Saliva Test Aims to Detect Salty Tears Disease Early
University of Maryland researchers unveiled a simple saliva test for fibrocystic disease in children, known as the salty tear disease. A cotton swab collects saliva to measure salt content, aiding early diagnosis at the American Academy of Pediatrics meeting. The disease disrupts digestion and sweat glands, can cause barrel chest and frequent illnesses, and often misdiagnosed as asthma or chronic diarrhea. Death can occur by age 12, with prevalence estimates ranging from 1 in 500 to 1 in 1,000 births, potentially higher in reality.
