Reading program to start soon in Ottawa Library
Ottawa Library launches its summer reading program on June 1 with theme Read Discover. Children 3 through fifth grade must read 20 books to participate, with prizes at 5 10 20 50 and 100 books. local restaurants donate prizes and Friends of the Library sponsors. A sixth to eighth grade mystery program begins with clues issued per 100 pages read, starting at a mystery party June 2 at 5 30 p m. The first clue notes a football player found dead in his dorm room.

Ottawa appoints Piotrowsky as city building inspector
Dave Piotrowsky, 44, promoted to Ottawa city building inspector replacing Al Hancock who resigned earlier this month. A longtime city employee, he has 4 1 4 years as an assistant inspector and previously worked as a housing grant coordinator. He holds an agriculture degree from Kansas State University and is married with two teen children. Hancock left to pursue private sector construction opportunities. In Knoxville the fifth of five Kansas jail escapees was arrested in a stolen car after an anonymous tip. Johnny Austin, 29, was taken into custody with four officers in Kirkwood Missouri after his travel partner surrendered.

Teens Focus on Social Problems in Latest Gallup Survey
The Gallup Youth Survey shows drug abuse as the top concern for teens, but its prominence has declined as AIDS, alcohol, teen pregnancy, and poverty join the list of major issues. Only 2 percent cite economic issues as the greatest national worry, with 6 percent naming crime and 8 percent environmental or poverty concerns. The study, based on 504 telephone interviews of 13 to 17 year olds conducted Nov 20–26, 1991, notes peer pressure exceeds parental influence in teens’ view of their generation’s problems.
