Depot pieces auctioned to fund new display cases

The Old Depot Museum is selling oak wall cabinets and antique items at Dale Weien's auction block Friday through Sunday to fund new cases. Franklin County Historical Society director Deb Barker notes the old oak emits acid gas and is insecure, while the new cases will be mobile, UV protected, and housed in a heated, year round depot with evolving exhibits. The auction features a Nehi grape soda fountain container likely fetching high dollars and a stuffed hippo once tied to Tom Mix, with sessions starting at 9:30 a.m. each day.

Barker announced 230 businesses were asked to donate items or cash for the campaign. A pledge challenge from Bob Shields boosts donations to reach $1,000, with further pledges encouraged. If funded, plans go to the Kansas State Historical Society and KDOT, with bid-setting possibly in early fall and project completion no more than three months once funds arrive.
