Nazi officer Schwammberger sentenced to life in prison
Josef Schwammberger, a former Nazi forced labor camp commandant, was found guilty of seven murders and 32 counts of being an accessory to murder and sentenced to life in prison in what is likely Germanys last major Nazi war crimes trial. Witnesses described his brutal acts during 1942 to 1944, including killing a rabbi on Yom Kippur and ordering guards to attack inmates. He admitted serving as an SS lieutenant but denied the charges as witnesses faded and age took its toll.
