NFL mediators see owners and players talk during CBA talks
A large group of NFL owners and union president Kevin Mawae joined mediation as the CBA deadline loomed. Owners gathered in Chantilly while Roger Goodell and the labor committee left after about four hours. Drew Brees attended, signaling full executive committee participation. Negotiators kept talking, with a possible extension discussed, as the league faced a work stoppage risk if no deal is reached.

Background checks rare in college football recruit screening
A Sports Illustrated CBS News study of 25 top programs finds only Oklahoma and TCU ran criminal background checks on recruits. About 7 percent of 2837 players, or 204, had legal trouble before or after entering college, with NCAA President Mark Emmert calling the figure concerning and noting a decentralized admissions approach. The report covers other schools including Penn State and Oregon among the slate of programs named.
