Dave Murphy of Ottawa, Kansas Riverkeeper, leads the Friends of the Kaw to safeguard the Kansas River and waterways. The group, founded in 1993, fought sand dredging, monitors water quality, and notes progress since the 1972 Clean Water Act while urging public involvement and better storm water management to protect navigable rivers for future generations.
Preliminary figures for the year ending Sunday show Kansas will start the new budget cycle below prior predictions. Officials cite a $200 million shortfall not accounting for interest and agency earnings, with lawmakers blaming mismanagement and planning gaps. Legislators delayed a $228 million aid payment to 303 districts, while $252 million in new taxes take effect to close the gap. Gov Graves warns further spending trims may follow.
State officials in Kansas conducted Prairie Plague, training 700 officials from 103 counties and state agencies to prepare for bioterrorism. Dr. Michael Moser and Dr. Gianfranco Pezzino emphasized rural readiness, ongoing planning since the 1990s, and a new federal grant plus more than $5 million to bolster local health and safety preparedness.
The large eastern Arizona blaze jumped containment and advanced toward 600 evacuated homes along Forest Lakes Estates as firefighters fought the 417,000 acre fire with bulldozers and retardant from air tankers. About 500 firefighters guarded the line while Gov. Hull urged patience as renewed smoke and shifting winds hampered containment efforts.
