Lightning protector crashes city power outage in Ottawa
A mid day outage in Ottawa was caused by a power surge from Kansas City Power and Light after a lightning arrestor failed at a KCP&L substation near Baldwin City. City crews faced issues with an air compressor leak and a line problem while KCP&L noted the problem cleared quickly. About 900 KCP&L direct customers in Douglas County lost power for roughly 24 minutes. Ottawa kept some areas energized with its own generators. Most areas were restored within 20 to 30 minutes with no major incidents or emergencies reported.

Kansas Gas Service seeks 74 million rate rise in Kansas
The state's largest retail natural gas supplier asks for a 15 percent rate increase, about $8.70 monthly for residential customers, claiming higher operating costs though wholesale gas costs stay the same. At a Kansas Corporation Commission hearing, residents voiced unease as officials defended the proposal, noting no increases since 1996 and a rise in utility investment. Kansas Gas Service serves about 642,000 customers in 341 communities.
