Mental health first aid class expands in Ottawa area
The Elizabeth Layton Center notes a 43 percent rise in mental health crisis contacts from 2015 to 2016 as it offers monthly eight hour mental health first aid courses. Executive director Leslie Bjork says the program aims to destigmatize mental illness and empower adults to act as first responders in crises. Classes, funded by United Way in Ottawa, include youth focused modules and upcoming sessions in Ottawa Paola and surrounding areas.
