Dairying remains a major Franklin County industry ranking third by dollar value behind beef and swine. Cattle numbers fell from 10,900 in 1960 to 5,200 in 1970, yet milk output stayed strong with 44,290,000 pounds in 1970. Holsteins comprise about 80 percent of county cattle and about 85 percent of national milk yields, while Guernseys decline to a few herds, Brown Swiss trace remains, and Ayrshire, Milking Shorthorn, and Jerseys are less common.
