Large Herd Not Always Highest Producing Herd
Mr and Mrs Truman Milton of Ottawa RFD 3 recount how a smaller herd, properly managed, can outproduce a larger one. Through selective culling, crossbreeding, DHIA tracking, and high grain rations, their 30 cows averaged 13 653 pounds in August 1971 with cows yielding 90 and 94 pounds daily before one udder failure ended a top producer.

Dairy heifers aid farm income for hog producer Rieck
Gary Rieck of Burlingame multiplies land use by purchasing 35 Holstein heifers weighing about 616 pounds each. He pastures them on brome and wheat and feeds milo and soybean meal in winter, breeding in November to calve late August. He plans to sell by August 10 and contemplates future heifer purchases if profitable. He continues hogs and crops, with seasonal labor by a local student.
