Tax Measure Triggers Senate Row Over Repeal
Washington (RP) a bill to repeal federal taxes on local telephone service telegraphs and travel faces hot debate and possible filibuster in the Senate. The dispute kept the chamber in session past midnight and threatened adjournment before the Democratic convention. The repeal would cost an estimated 752 million dollars in revenue. The measure was attached to a broader bill requested by President Eisenhower for a four billion dollar tax extension and debt-limit increase. Senate leaders faced protests from Sen. Joseph Clark and strong words from Sen. Lyndon B. Johnson as the plan moved forward. Treasury warns Eisenhower would veto if revenue cuts were added. Crises span into funeral arrangements for Nathan Gathin Monday afternoon.
