Plaque is a colorless film on teeth loaded with bacteria that ferment sugars into acids, eroding enamel. As it advances below the gum line it hardens into tartar, driving gum disease and tooth loss. Daily brushing and dental floss remove plaque, with professional cleanings needed for tartar. Public health note from Dr. Robert L. Bell in Ottawa.
