Kansas mother of the year honored in Topeka plaque install

Kansas mother of the year, Itawan Bev Deardorff of Ottawa, was honored in Topeka with a permanent plaque in the capitol marking her as the 60th recipient. A luncheon, plaque ceremony, and Cedar Crest reception capped the day, with Deardorff praising family support and her fellow mothers of the year.

Hospice and real estate swap downtown locations

Midland Hospice Care Inc. and Ottawa Real Estate swapped offices moving into each other’s former sites. Ottawa Real Estate relocated to Midland’s 635 S Main address while Midland took over Ottawa Real Estate’s 120 W 3rd building. The moves aim for greater visibility and space with interior updates underway.

Melvern hog permit denied by KDHE after public hearing

KDHE rejected Lewis’s slurry hog waste plan for an 867000 gallon tank citing lack of containment design and overall waste system details. About 90 residents attended the December hearing in Lebo voicing concerns over odor pollution groundwater contamination and property values near Melvern Reservoir.

Corporate farmer touts gas to energy system test

Premium Standard has been testing a gas to energy system since February in Sullivan County. The process uses produced gases to generate energy, burning them after recovery, with liquids digested for fertilizer on land. The company projects a $70,000 payback in two years by yielding $37,000 annual energy output.

Wal Marts to Open Mid July With New Workers

Skunk Run to Proceed Despite Rain on Main Street

Skunks will run on Main Street with rain contingency as canopy covers the PA setup. Entertainment chief Gwynn McCurdy notes electrical gear stays under cover if rain falls. The 1995 Skunk Run menu features hamburgers, hot dogs, pie, cinnamon rolls, fruit, burritos, snow cones, juice, lemonade and soda. Proceeds benefit humanities groups sponsoring Skunk Run Days. Races begin Sunday morning with an 8:00 a.m. 5K and an 8:30 a.m. 1 mile.
