Ottawa Board Plans Fall Middle School Housing

The Ottawa Fees board approved a plan to house the sixth graders in elementary buildings and seventh and eighth graders at Ottawa High School this fall. Wal-Mart offered its former south side store at cost after waiving a 15 year lease, but conversion costs would run at least $500,000 and no outdoor recreation space would be available. The district may add modular classrooms and reuse them later. A proposal to build a temporary facility to convert to a community center has merit but the city would struggle to justify such use. The city hall and library move could free space for a middle school if they relocate to the Franklin Savings building.
