The Kansas Corporation Commission approved a reduced rate increase for Kansas Public Service from 1.28 million to 625,000, raising average bills about 4.2 percent and residential charges to 4.15 monthly. The ECC also approved Chase County Gas Service Co. sale to Greeley Gas Co. and scheduled a public hearing in Winfield on a 23,138 electricity revenue hike. Aud faced appointments and military leadership changes. Governor Finney named Audrey B. McCaig to the Board of Veterinary Examiners. The 184th Tactical Fighter Group will welcome Col. Frank Scoggins as new commander, replacing Col. Edward Sykes. Attorney General Bob Stephan urged Congress to let states regulate interstate waste transportation and disposal after Supreme Court rulings limiting state laws.
Grace Episcopal Church in Kansas marked its centennial in 1967 amid a history of land purchases, mortgage burnings, and building repurposings. The 45-member congregation funded a 1951 building, consecrated 1954, and later expanded under Rev. Claude Sauerbrei. The church preserves a Santa Fe locomotive bell bearing a cross insignia, a symbol of enduring love. Now led by Windy Breeze, the first woman ordained in the diocese, Grace Church counts about 100 members.
Gallup Youth Survey finds American teens more alarmed than adults about global environmental issues. Teens rate ozone depletion, pollution, rain forests loss, soil erosion, and species loss as very serious or serious, with 52 percent deeming global warming very serious.
Authorities closed the Huey P. Long killing case with the same conclusion as 57 years earlier that Dr. Carl A. Weiss shot Long in the abdomen at pointblank range. Weiss was aided by Long's bodyguards who fired the fatal shot, with no autopsy evidence to dispute the long-standing theory.
Emily Johnson a 5 year old resident of Wellsville is in stable condition at the University of Kansas Medical Center after a Thursday one vehicle crash four miles south of Eudora in Douglas County. She was ejected from the van while her mother Patricia Johnson 30 drove northbound on 1061 and lost control after shifting into park. Emily fled by Life Flight to the hospital with injuries including a broken left collarbone a bruised lung and multiple cuts while her siblings Andrew 8 and Erin 2 escaped injury.
