New York Faces Major Storm Surge Rise by Century
A Boston meeting of the American Geophysical Union reports that New York City could see seven foot storm surges as often as every 4-5 years if sea levels rise 1 to 3 feet by 2090. The study cautions barrier islands could fail and low-lying areas including Manhattan and Brooklyn could flood, with heat days rising to 28-81 annually and millions affected. The final report is due next year.

Europa Ocean Too Harsh for Life Researchers say thick ice limits energy for life forms
AP reports scientists challenge the idea of oceans beneath Europa's ice supporting life. NASA Galileo data suggested possible oceans, but a six mile ice layer blocks sunlight. Caltech scientists Kirschvink and Gaidos say only simple organisms might survive, perhaps using rust or other energy sources.
