Desegregation Plan Continues Amid Court Oversight Change
District officials said the order was anti climatic as the Brown desegregation case lingered. Linda Brown, now with her own children in Topeka schools, joined a revived suit in 1979 claiming ongoing segregation. Rogers had ruled for defendants in 1987 and in 1994 approved the district’s plan though debates over racially identifiable schools persisted. The district will shift the elementary gifted program from magnets back to neighborhood schools this fall with court approval.
