Up to 1000 Near Earth Asteroids Pose Potential Risk
Scientists at a conference on asteroids and comets warn that 500 to 1000 nearby asteroids are large enough and close enough to threaten Earth. Rabinowitz of JPL estimates 2000 to 4000 asteroids about one third of a mile wide cross Earth’s orbital path, capable of regional damage but unlikely to cause global extinction. The dinosaurs’ extinction 65 million years ago was due to a much larger asteroid.

Rail merger still fouled up by logistics and delays
Two railroads CSX Corp and Norfolk Southern Corp began a costly recovery from the Conrail breakup.
