Ottawa city budget trims mill rate in 1997 proposal
City Manager Scott Lambers led a cut reducing the general fund by 40 thousand dollars from 475 thousand, lowering the mill rate from 12.38 to about 11.34 and reducing total city budget mills from 46 151 to about 45 111. The latest assessed valuation for 1997 is estimated at 38 367 000, five million higher than this year and 3.6 million above first estimates. A house valued at 50 000 would pay 259.39 in property taxes next year, down from 281.54, though a 10 percent valuation rise would offset the lower mill levy. A public budget hearing was held with no comments.
