States Try New Scheme For Safety
Michigan and Tennessee adopted different highway safety measures in 1967 and both states ended the year with fewer traffic deaths than in 1966. Tennessee launched a crackdown on reckless and drunken driving with patrols, blocks, and inspections, while Michigan credited a new drinking drivers law, more inspection lanes, and tougher enforcement. Deaths for the first seven months in Tennessee rose 96 but soon declined as task forces and enhanced police activity curbed violations.
