Pueblo Crisis Pushes U S to Balance Diplomacy and Readiness

Nearly 14,800 air reservists prepare for possible indefinite active duty as the Johnson administration seeks a bloodless settlement of the Pueblo incident. The U N Security Council heads an urgent meeting to push for the ship and crew’s return while Washington weighs a show of force and new diplomacy with the Soviet Union. Senate Reapportionment Plan Advances From House

The 40 district plan cleared the House by 68 to 48 and returns to the Senate for possible acceptance of a single boundary change moving a Pottawatomie County township from District 19 to 18. If rejected, a conference committee would decide before sending the measure to Gov. Docking, who has not yet indicated a position. Democratic lawmakers mostly opposed the bill as Republicans pushed for 40 districts with populations from 53 449 to 58 519 to satisfy a federal court order.

Kansas Senate brief session votes on state education board

TOPEKA AP The Kansas Senate met briefly for under 10 minutes and recessed for the weekend after adopting a motion by Sen Frank S Hodge to delay a final vote on an education bill creating a nonpartisan State Board of Education. The body had given preliminary approval Thursday. A new bill by Sen Jack Barr would let districts buy or rent space for teachers in housing shortages, noting rural areas already do this and the bill would legalize the practice.
