Unconscious Injured In Junction City Car Crash

Mrs. Charles Carey Jr. of Ottawa remained semi conscious after Monday night crash 15 miles west of Junction City. Her husband improved in hospital at Junction City. she suffered a broken jaw and injuries. A daughter from San Diego was due to arrive. Two soldiers were killed in the accident. Carey and his brother Raymond returned to Junction City tonight.

Fire Claims Three Children in Atchison Home

A fire in Atchison killed Jacqueline Robin son 4, Alonzo Robinson 3, and Sonja Robinson 1, children of Edwin and Mrs Clake. A fourth child, Marian, 2, remained in critical condition at a hospital.

California Faces Clean-Up After Worst Floods in History

Northern California began cleanup as fair weather returned after the worst floods. Deaths rose to 34 with 19 to 35 missing or possibly dead. Military crews used boats and aircraft to save lives and reduce losses. Damage reached about 150 million dollars as over a million acres flooded and rainfall totaled as much as 31 inches in parts of the coast. Scientists reported this flood span as the region's worst on record, with rivers still swollen but major danger fading.

Four Youngsters Rescue Playmate In Santa Ana Cave

In Loma Linda California four youths Darrell Rogers and siblings Clyde 15 Irving Clark 14 Robert Jelss 12 and Clyde 9 dug with their hands to free 12 year old playmate trapped under three tons of dirt when a homemade cave collapsed near the Santa Ana River wash. The boy was rushed to county hospital in critical condition with a fractured rib and punctured lung.

Deaths Retired Farmer Will Wolken 75

Will Wolken 75 a retired Richmond farmer died yesterday in Ransom Memorial hospital after 14 months of declining health. He was married to Magdalena Lickteig in 1903 in a double wedding with his sister and Frank Lickteig. Funeral in St. Therese Church, burial at St. Boniface Cemetery. Survivors include wife and eight children, 16 grandchildren, two great grandchildren, sisters and a brother. One son and one daughter predeceased.

Frankfurter army court sentences Kenneth D. Miller San Francisco 23 to two years hard labor for desertion to Communist East Germany with German girlfriend Irmegard Bamberg. Miller attached to 4th Infantry Division in Frankfurt crossed into East Germany on April 21 1954 returned Sept 3 and gave himself up. He cited dislike of conditions there as motive.
